With four locations, By The Hand
serves 726 kids this year-mind, body and soul.
And while this is a dramatic increase from when
our program began with only 16 kids and one
location, the waiting list of children to attend
By The Hand is long and the need is
great. Our goal is to serve 1,000 children from
the most under-resourced neighborhoods with
the lowest performing schools by the year 2012.

this goal.

How your funds
are used
By The Hand can serve only
as many children as your generosity allows.
Although there is no charge to attend our program,
the annual cost per child is $5,700. Of this
amount, only $228 are allocated to administration
and $684 to fund development. The remaining
$4,788 are dedicated to programming and providing
kids with meals, healthcare, field trips and
transportation to and from By The Hand.
(Even though many kids live within walking distance,
transportation is necessary because of nearby
gang activity). Staff compensation and benefits
are the largest line items, reflecting a high
student-to-adult ratio, which allows each child
to receive the kind of personal attention and
programming they need to flourish.

Gifts-In-Kind Needed
By The Hand needs many new
supplies each year for art, school, the office,
athletics and the kitchen, etc. Rather than
donating the actual supplies which often leads
to duplication and waste, we kindly request
that you consider donating a gift-card from
a major retailer such as Home Depot, Office
Depot, Container Store, Target, Wal-Mart, Best
Buy, etc. That way, we can buy exactly what
is needed, when it is needed. For more information
